Ontario’s free bacterial-testing route
Public Health Ontario tests qualifying private drinking-water samples for E. coli and total coliforms. The program is designed to identify bacterial contamination; it does not test the same sample for chemicals, minerals or metals.
What the PHO result can — and cannot — tell you
A clear bacteria result is useful, but it is not a complete water-quality screen. PHO specifically directs questions about chemical contaminants to local public-health guidance. For a purchase, decide separately whether chemistry, metals or other parameters should be tested based on the property and local concerns.
Sampling and results in Ontario
- Use the approved sterile collection bottle and follow the current PHO sampling instructions.
- Keep the sample handled and transported exactly as instructed; poor collection can invalidate the result.
- If you submit through the online Water Testing Portal, PHO says reports are generally available online within 2–4 business days.
Connect the water test to the well record
Ontario’s well record can help you check historical construction details, depth, location and sometimes contractor or pumping-test information. It does not prove current potability. A strong buyer file keeps the source record, current water test and any well inspection together.
